Trips to Oaxaca

2012Oaxaca_356Welcome to Oaxaca! Nestled in the valley of the Sierra Madre del Sur mountains in southern Mexico, the colonial city of Oaxaca offers an unparalleled linguistic and cultural experience for those seeking to immerse themselves in the Mexican language and lifestyle. Spanish House has joined with Lingoax, a Oaxaca-based language school to offer intensive Spanish classes, homestays with local families, cultural workshops, tours in and around the city of Oaxaca and daily conversation exchanges with native-Spanish speakers.

2012Oaxaca_311By enrolling in our immersion program, you have the opportunity to support a non-profit organization closely aligned with Lingoax, La Protección a la Joven de Oaxaca. This organization assists young women from rural areas in the state of Oaxaca who, due to a lack of educational opportunities in their towns, move to Oaxaca City in order to complete their studies. A portion of the tuition is given directly to these young women, who depend on La Protección a la Joven  for financial and academic support. By participating in our Oaxaca program, you not only will receive an unforgettable immersion experience, but you will also give back to support a worthy cause.

Classes

Classes are held Monday – Friday from 9:00 – 12:00. You may start classes any Monday throughout the year. Classes are divided into six levels, Beginning 1, Beginning 2, Intermediate 1, Intermediate 2, Advanced 1 and Advanced 2. Upon arriving to the school, you will take a pre-assessment to determine which class is most appropriate for you. Classes are limited to 6 students for maximum participation. All classes are taught by experienced, native-Spanish speaking teachers who have a solid command and thorough understanding of the Spanish language. The four language abilities (listening, speaking, reading and writing) are addressed in each class.

Classes are held in historic downtown Oaxaca at La Casa de la Protección a la Joven de Oaxaca.

Private classes are available during the day or afternoon. Special programs are also available for groups or individuals seeking to learn industry-specific Spanish. We offer Business Spanish, Medical Spanish and Spanish for Teachers. If you are looking for something more specific, please check with us about creating a special curriculum to meet your needs.

Teachers at Spanish House/Lingoax are experienced, certified teachers who are native-Spanish speakers. They bring with them backgrounds in linguistics, Spanish literature, theater and communications. Classes are conducted in Spanish-only and use authentic Spanish materials. Each class focuses on listening, speaking, reading and writing activities. Not only will your Spanish teachers help you assimilate to the Oaxacan way of life, but they will also prepare you to leave Oaxaca with a solid foundation in the Spanish language that will help you in future studies.

Homestays

An important aspect of the immersion program is the homestay option. Spanish House/Lingoax arranges for you to live with a local family during your time in Oaxaca as a way for you to further immerse yourself in the Mexican way of life. By choosing the homestay option, you receive a private or shared room, one or two meals per day with the family and most importantly, the opportunity to experience life in a Mexican family’s home.

2012Oaxaca_219We also offer lodging in more independent posadas (hostels with meals provided), or hotels (without meals) in downtown Oaxaca.

Tours & Workshops

Spanish House/Lingoax arranges weekend excursions to cultural and historical sites in and around the city of Oaxaca. Whether at the historic ruins in Monte Alban, Yagul or Mitla, the weaver’s village of Teotitlan, the land of the famous black pottery in San Martin Coyotapec or in San Martin Tilacajete, known for its brightly-colored wooden carvings (alebrijes), you will experience the beauty and significance of each destination with a small group and tour guide. We provide a van and experienced driver to make sure the tours are safe, comfortable and timely.

You may also participate in cultural workshops to enhance your regular Spanish classes. Classes meet for one hour per day, four days a week, with a new class beginning each Monday. Classes include: Salsa dancing, Mexican cooking, ceramics, weaving, music history, art history and more. It is possible to participate only in the cultural classes with no language classes.

City of Oaxaca

Oaxaca is a city of approximately 500,000 people and is located in southern Mexico. It is the largest city in the state of Oaxaca, which borders Guerrero, Puebla, Veracruz and Chiapas. Well-traveled by tourists from around the world, Oaxaca is known for its cuisine, art, music, colonial architecture, ancient ruins, and fascinating history. With its famous churches and squares, museums and galleries, street markets and cafes, simply walking the streets of the city is a peaceful and enlightening experience. The many small towns around Oaxaca, each of which has its own charm and significant sights, are easily accessible by taxi or bus. The beautiful beaches of Huatulco and Puerto Escondido are about 6 hours away by car and about an hour by plane.
